New York Historical Society

You may have seen these ads all around New York City the past few months. Well, On Friday I went to the New York Historical Society for my history class. It is located right across the street from the Musuem of Natural History. I think these two museums may be my favorite places in all of New York City. My history class is about the civil war and Abraham Lincoln. The exhibits that i looked at in the historical society were about Lincoln and new york city. You may not know it but Lincoln striked up a lot of controversy in New York City during the Civil War. The whole exhibit talked about the draft riots in New York, his speech at the Cooper Union and about how the people of New York were divided against him. Walking into the museum was like walking into a piece of history. I got to stand in front of the podium the Abraham Lincoln stood behind to give one of his most famous speeches in which he finally revealed his position on slavery in the United States. I saw the jacket he wore on his second inaugural address. This may not seem very interesting but I think this was the coolest thing ever!!! All of these pieces of history were all in one room. I even saw the uniform of the first union soldier to die in the war. Abraham Lincoln was such an interesting president. The exhibit explores the different sides of Lincoln. The Cooper union Lincoln, the photgraphed, powerful Lincoln and the self-made man. I was really interested in the self-made man part. Abraham Lincoln was a poor, uneducated child. He taught himself everything he knew. The president we all know made himself into a well educated person. I think this is amazing. It shows that a person really can have nothing and yet make themselves something. I really enjoyed the historical society. I would really recommend taking a look at the exhibit. On the day I went they even had people dressed up and reenacting the war. HOW COOL!!!!!!!!
