power of words

I took this photo in Union Square. A group of people brought bunch of letters and made

others participee in froming words out of them.

I think it goes well with this blog entry- power of words.

“Every man takes the limits of his own field of vision for the limits of the world.”
-    Arthur Schopenhauer

Every one of you has definitely already seen one of the poems that are posted inside the subway trains. You might have not thought of it as art, but to me it has the same goals as art does- it is there to inspire and make people think. I saw many of those little quotes or short poems all around me, however this one, particularly, had a huge impact on me. These seventeen words are more inspirational and eye opening, than anything I have ever heard in my life.
First, if we were to substitute “for” for “to”, its meaning would change drastically. It would become a phrase that would inspire people to think without any borders, “limits of the world”. We can see what is in front of us at the moment, but we can also see what we want to see, and for that there are no limits. That is exactly what I think. We should not be enclosed by the building or the rules the society puts around us, contrary, we should be able to open our horizons and think broadly, on a large scale. There shouldn’t be anybody who can tell us that we cannot do the project we were assigned, or get the job we dreamt of since we were little kids. There are no limits!
But if we were to stay with the original sense of the sentence it is the complete opposite; people tend to believe that they are the center of the universe and that everything else is happening around them. This is of course not true. Each person on this planet is as important as an ant- not at all. The fact that one went to the movies or saw an opera, affects nobody but them. People die, wars start, earthquakes happen, but our daily lifes are as they were.

If you ever have a moment, sitting on a subway, look around for a poem, maybe it will change your perspective on the world as this one has changed mine.
