Quartett

On Tuesday night, when we saw Quartett, I though it was a very unusual and entertaining production. When it began and the lights when out and we heard a loud noise it made me jump. I was like I wonder what we're in for. I thought Quartett was an exciting adventure. i have never seen anything like it before and I think that's why it appealed to me. I didn't realize it would be in french. I think having it in another language made it more appealing. It sounded so beautiful when the Marquise de Merteuil spoke her voice was amazing. I think it was so powerful when she was yelling at Valmont in french. I also liked how they played eachother. i really thought I was going to be confused when she would play the role of Valmont and when Valmont would play the role of the Marquise. It was actually quite funny. I think that the play was a very serious one but by doing this humor is added into the dark plot. Another part of the play that I loved was when the main characters were talking and their pitches would change. In one scene the Marquise says Madame over and over again. She says it in her normal voice and then says it almost in a yell. It was creepy and weird and yet perfect in that scene. I actually saw something on television related to Quartett the other day. They actually made a movie based on it. Its called Valmont. It is about a man and a woman in Paris. They have a love affair and are joined together once again in a lustful plot involving the  virginal neice of the women. I turned the movie on and was highly disappointed. The play was so much better. The costumes and the lighting all made the play seem so dark and mysterious. The movie seemed too happy and colorful for me. I didn't feel like it captured the true emotion of the play.
