In recent years there has been an enormous influx of immigrants settling in Flatbush, Brooklyn from the Caribbean Islands. Between 1992 and 1996, Flatbush ranked first in the city in the number of immigrants from Haiti, Trinidad, Grenada, and Panama. It ranked second in the number of Jamaican immigrants.

Political Demographic

As of the year 2000 there is a population of 316,700 people living in Flatbush. Of these people, 30% of these are between the ages of 25 and 44. Another 28% is made up by those ages 0 to 17. The percentage of people living below the poverty level in Flatbush is 2%, which is lower than the percentage of Brooklyn overall, where the level is 25%.

More then half the residents of Flatbush ( 51%) were born outside the United States. Education is on the rise in this neighborhood. Of Flatbush residents 71% have at least a high school diploma.
