Talk:Main Page

From The Peopling of New York City

PoNY,

What a triumph! The wiki/website is superb. You should be very proud. It is, in fact, the most ambitious, sophisticated, and brilliant final project that I have ever seen in my 5 years of teaching the PoNY course. So after a rocky start, you guys really came through and did some terrific work.

Two suggestions for minor edits: 1) is the subheading, Diversity and its Discontents, really appropriate? You might want to change it. And 2) there are still minor stylistic and grammatical errors. It would probably be good if you all read through it once again and tried to eliminate extra words.

But overall, I'm very proud of you, and am extremely impress by all of your hard work and by this fine result. You can certainly hold your heads up high when you go to the Tuesday evening forum.

Congratulations,

JM

We should put our names on it somewhere.

Here are the titles for every page. Please place in parenthesizes any issues that need to be addressed.

  • Home
  • A Pluralistic Paradise
  • The 411 on Jackson Heights
  • If you were Looking for Property Here
  • The Political Economy of Diversity (can someone please explain what this means?)
  • Gentrification: A Threat to Diversity
  • Revitalization of the Neighborhood
  • Marketing
  • New High Cost of Living (I think The New High Cost of Living sounds better.)
  • Displacement
  • An Uncertain Future
  • Don't Forget About Us (The actual page is called The Peopling of New York City:About. This page title should probably be changed to reflect the tab title.)

--There's a reason for this one. There's a link at the bottom of the wiki called "About the Peopling of New York City". This needs to link somewhere because I can't get rid of it (it's part of the skin), so I put the "about us" page on the built-in about page. I changed the tab title to the left, but that's why that page has that specific title--Helen

-- Maybe we could just have the About page link to the Don't Forget About Us page?

  • What We Did (This actual page is called Methodology. This page title should probably also be changed to reflect its tab title.)

Thanks.

Please be sure you're looking at this site in the gumax skin (if you see Selling Diversity Out in Jackson Heights in a banner at the top of the page, you're in gumax). Since the banner title and the title on the home page is different, I want to be sure you've considered that.--HELEN

We need LOTS of technical and minor edits. All our major tabs should introduce each subpage in text, not "continue" or go to the next page. We want people to explore and find their own answers and not feel like they are being ordered where to go. So look at the work done on the front pages and make sure that you are continuing this on the subpages. [Edit: Maybe it's just me, but having the "Continue to the next page to find out" or "We explore this in the next section" engages the viewer and provides organization and structure.]

Secondly, on font and font size. Captions for the pictures are in font size 1. As is all font on this page except for major headings. It is everyone's responsibility to make sure that we carry out the continuity throughout the entire site. The same goes for links to the next logical page. Intext links to other pages (like backpages) should be font 1 and NOT bolded. Only the page that we want the reader to go to next should be bolded, still in size 1.

~ I think that we need to add more perspective on the people who live in JH and who believe that it is diverse and why. We did mention the business people but maybe more of the residents. Are there any more cognitive maps out there that havent been uploaded? - Jo
