Northern Manhattan Coalition  For Economic Development

Mission

Established in 1997, the Northern Manhattan Coalition for Economic Development (NMCED) is a non-profit corporation created to promote economic development, self-sufficiency and the creation of a living environment conducive to local businesses and residents.

Interview With Ms. Elba, Deputy Director:

Ms. Elba is a second-generation Dominican who is completing her masters degree in the School of Public Affairs at Baruch. She wants to help the community through services such as GED classes, and job training. She works with the local government to ensure that the residents of Washington Heights receive these services.

Political Involvement

"Our organization needs grants from the government. We have to get involved and support politicians who have helped us in the past. We must get involved in politics to help the community."

Political Activism

"Dominicans have more of a voice now than they did previously. We have representation in the New York City Council. The second generation is speaking up more and is very active politically."

Help From the Democratic Party

"Democrats helps us somewhat, although there are always issues that fall through the cracks. Right now we are very concerned about rent prices going up and fare hikes from the MTA. We are relying on members of the Democratic Party to help us with these issues."
