Last Thursday, I attended an ASEDOM club event. ASEDOM is a club dedicated to the dominican community in Baruch. Its event, called "Kumbacarey" was a celebration of the Dominican culture during communist rule, specifically when Trujillo, the country's last dictator was in power. This kind of afro dominican style of music was banned while he was in rule, as were many other things.

 I wanted to comment on the physicality of actually taking a photograph and being successful at it.  During my Snapshot experience, I found that it was not only pretty hard to pick a subject, but to be able to capture it artistically was a whole different story. I felt a little inapt as I was capturing photographs, because I didn't know how to make them look "artsy" and interesting. Watching others present their photographs on Wednesday in class definitely gave me more of a sense of how a photographer makes a piece of art out of its subject.

 When our IDC class was given the "Snapshot NYC" assignment, I was curious to see how it would play out. I thought it was an intriguing idea that we could have an assignment that was supposed to portray our neighborhood, be about something else completely, that still spoke of "home" to you. It took me some time to figure out what it was that I was trying to capture; a flower, an ornate object, the water, what was there in NYC that spoke of the "ideal" neighborhood to me. I was surprised upon my findings, actually.

 I find it odd that although we claim to be in a "Arts in NY" course, we have not yet mentioned film as a form of art, nor have touched upon the subject of film at all. New York is such a central point for filmography, there are countless films created right here in New York. I was in Union Square Park on Wednesday and I experienced firsthand film students working on a project right in the middle of Union Square Park. There were various students form the New York Film Academy attempting to record. Exactly what they were trying to accomplish I'm not sure.

On Thursday night, I ventured across Manhattan to the Macaulay honors College to my first Meet the Artist event. I didn't really know what to expect at first, I was little informed about what exactly we would be experiencing there that night.
