Perceptions

When I initially think of these two neighborhoods, I immediately think of secluded immigrant neighborhoods.  I have never been to Brighton Beach, but from our class discussions, I know that it is a heavily populated Russian community.  Yet, if I were to just hear the name, Brighton Beach, I would believe that this is an area that is by the beach.  Due to its proximity to Coney Island, I would think that it would be very similar to that.  In regards to Chinatown, I define Chinatown as an area with many Chinese restaurants and shops in a specific area.  However, I am only familiar with the 'mainstream' area of Chinatown known for its knockoff purses and influx of different types of people.  I have been to the more 'residential'  area of Chinatown a couple of times.  From that experience, I feel as though Chinatown is very secluded as they seem to keep to themselves.
