Gay Neighborhoods: The Village & Harlem

The topic of gays and lesbians is a very interesting subject due to the fact that it is so controversial. It was fascinating to read about the past of Greenwich Village and how these people made a place for themselves there. I have never been to Greenwich Village but I have heard from accounts from my friends that it is a very liberal place. From an outsider’s view of this place in the past, it is very open-minded and it seems to be a welcoming place for gays and lesbians because they flock there. However, from this reading, Greenwich Village is not as welcoming as outsiders might think. Certain people that live there want to kick these people out by raising the rent, thinking that they are cleaning up the place.

I have drawn a picture of how people view gays, as effeminate. It is ironic how people despise gays and lesbians, thinking that they are pervert but attending the many parties that feature these people. People make money because of gays and lesbians. It makes sense that people are attracted to places that gays and lesbians attend. This is because many are curious of what they are like and they wish to see and gawk for themselves.

It is very sad to read that gay men hide who they are from their families to protect them. It must be very hard to conceal a part of themselves from people who they love. However, times have changed since the past and gays and lesbians are more accepted in our society, but there are people who still hide that part of themselves fearing judgment. I hope that in the near future, people can reveal who they are and not be afraid.
