Our Interviews

For our project, we conducted two interviews to gain more insight into the AIDS epidemic of the 1980s, specifically on the social, economic, and political factors that worsened the spread of HIV in New York City. By interviewing Mayor Koch and Dr. Oppenheimer, we were able to incorporate different viewpoints of the AIDS crisis into our documentary.  These interviews were vital to the project because they supplemented our own research and further enlightened our understanding of the epidemic’s complexities.

Mayor Edward Koch
Edward Koch was a United States Congressman from 1969 to 1977 and the Mayor of New York City from 1978 to 1989.

Gerald Oppenheimer, Ph.D., M.P.H.
Gerald Oppenheimer is a professor at Brooklyn College and CUNY’s Graduate Center. He primarily teaches on epidemiology and the history of public health and medicine.

Both interviews were done by Mobeen Farooq, CUNY Macaulay Honors College, Brooklyn College.

We would like to thank both Mr. Koch and Dr. Oppenheimer for their time and the knowledge they contributed to our project. Thank You!
