Macaulay Students Win Gilman Scholarships for Study Abroad in 2017

Macaulay Honors College congratulates Nabil Ahmed Khatri ’17 (City College) and Michelle Sheu ’18 (Baruch College and CUNY BA) for winning the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship for the Spring 2017 semester. They join Devin Lee ’17 (Queens College) and Winnie Shen ’18 (Hunter College) who received the Gilman Scholarship for the Fall 2016 semester. The Gilman Scholarship Program goal is to diversify the kinds of students who study and intern abroad by offering awards to U.S. undergraduates who might otherwise not participate due to financial constraints. It is intended to better prepare U.S. students to assume significant roles in an increasingly global economy and interdependent world.

Nabil Khatri is a Computer Science major at the Grove School of Engineering at City College. Nabil is one of three siblings to attend Macaulay; a fourth sibling is in the CUNY family at Queens College. Nabil is studying abroad for the first time and will be attending the VU Amsterdam (Vrije Universiteit) in the Netherlands.

Michelle Sheu is pursuing her self-directed CUNY BA in Design and Storytelling to explore the intersections of tech and visual communication as a medium to address social issues. Michelle will be studying abroad in Costa Rica at the Universidad Veritas.   In the Fall of 2015, Michelle was named a Thomas W. Smith Fellow with CUNY BA; she is also a William R. Kenan Scholar at Macaulay

The Gilman Program aims to encourage students to choose non-traditional study and intern destinations, especially those outside of Western Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Award recipients are chosen by a competitive selection process and must use the award to defray eligible study or intern abroad costs. Over 2,700 scholarships of up to $5,000 will be awarded this academic year for U.S. citizen undergraduates to study or intern abroad.
