College News

The annual Macaulay Honors College BioBlitz is one of the largest and most important academic events of the year. An amazing team produces this unique, multi-day experiential learning program designed to deepen Macaulay students’ data literacy skills by having them engage in real fieldwork with scientists. Students can then use and interpret this collective data in their culminating projects for their Science Forward seminars.

These results not only fuel student learning in our Macaulay seminars; they are also shared with Prospect Park and the general public via iNaturalist. Student projects produced for the Macaulay’s STEAM festival will be shared with the Park as well.

Macaulay Provost Roblin Meeks observed, “in addition to detecting bats and examining mulberry trees, I witnessed a college coming together despite some rough weather to pull off a big learning event for over 400 of our students.”

Thanks to scientists and educators from throughout the region working in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park alongside multiple college departments, staff, and student volunteers who pushed through one of the wettest weekends in September, Macaulay’s 2023 BioBlitz was a huge success!
